It really is chilling to read the speech JFK didn't get to deliver – is it taking things too far to hear its echo also in the "watchman" that lays sleeping in "Tempest", the song that sits alongside "Roll on John"? Maybe it's a different watchman, just like he was singing about a different John, and just like Dylan insisted "Tempest" was totally different from Shakespeare's "The Tempest", but maybe the echoes are there nonetheless. What a beautiful, original, and relevant piece, Graley, thank you – your mind and your writing is inspiring as always, and I look forward to reading the next parts!
Oooh, yes--the watchman in "Tempest"! I forgot about him, but you're absolutely right to pick up on that echo, Laura. The sinking of the ship of state. Wish I had thought of that myself, but that's what friends are for, eh? Thanks for your thoughtful reply, and I hope you like the next two parts. You were one of my inspirations for "Murder Most Foul," so I'll be especially interested to hear what you think of that one. Roll on Laura!
"They buy and they sell, they,ll destroy your city they,ll destroy you as well"
I very much want to go to Tulsa again ( I was there in 2019 and had the time of my life) but now I have second thoughts. There is actually a military menace in the Greenland case and many Europeans try to boykot anything American...
I will certainly understand if you feel that 2025 is not the right time for a trip to the U.S., Anne Sofie. The European contingent is so central to Dylan and will be missed very much in Tulsa if the boycotts remain in place. My best wishes to you, whether it is in person or from a distance.
Thank you Graley for this insightful and great writing. You seem to keep up the spirits in times with these awful merchants in power. "Incompetent billionaires" as Joan Baez puts it.
Thanks for your kindness and encouragement, Anne Sofie. Best hopes to you, too, in tiny Denmark (and not so tiny Greenland!). Too many billionaires and imperialists playing with our world like its their little toy.

Graley this is just a wonderful and original piece. So looking forward to the next one.
I adressed this topic in my book, Bob Dylan in the 2020s, https://tangiblepress.net/Bob_Dylan_in_the_2020s.html, but I have to admit it was less documented and less developed.
Thank you for this and looking forward to reading the next chapters.
Oh, you've picked a biggie, here Graley. Fine start and I look forward to the rest.

Best hopes from Anne Sofie in tiny Denmark

Excellent. Thank you.
