Not sure how I missed this at the time, but just caught up and wow - this is a monumental achievement, and a wonderful document of the tour. Looking forward to diving into part 2 now
Thanks, Matthew! I've been enjoying your great writing on your Substack, too. It's nice to branch out beyond Bob every now and then, eh? But he's still the true north, so he'll always guide us back home. Hope you like Part 2--some real gems in the second half of the RARW concerts, as you well know.
Thanks, Graley. Yes, definitely - and then always nice to come back to him with fresh ears and find something new, even after all this time. Looking forward to Dylan heading back to Cincinatti to get more great Shadow Chasing writing about the show
And I accidentally hit something that posted my comment before I was done. I hope that you - maybe with Ray? - do a book on the RAWR tour. It is so unique and it’s own work of art that we get to see as a dynamic venture. Think about it.
Thanks, Roberta! Seed planted. My contributions on the RARW Tour are small potatoes next Rough and Rowdy Ray's (see how hard I'm trying to get this thing going?). But you're absolutely right that this tour marks a distinct experiment and another grand achievement in Dylan's art. Definitely book-worthy for someone.
Great piece, shows you how much can change in two years even on a seemingly identical setlist. Love the idea of "I'll Be Your Baby" as a murder ballad too. Bring on part 2!
Thanks, Ray! Your coverage of the RARW tour has been amazing and was a big inspiration for this piece. Glad to hear that the murder ballad take has convinced at least one person beyond my warped mind. Now if only I can get this Rough and Rowdy Ray nickname to stick....
I always appreciate your meditations on Dylan's Cincinnati shows. I attended both of these concerts, and your detailed and attentive musings definitely ring true. I recall being astounded at the powerful vocals contrasted with the technical glitches and physical frailty you mention from the first show. The second show felt wholly celebratory and much more relaxed and good humored. I look forward to your Part 2.
Thanks, Jay--and happy Thanksgiving! I agree: Dylan's voice was great at the Aronoff, even if some other aspects of the show were rough (and rowdy) around the edges. But the atmosphere in 2021 was much more somber than 2023 at the Brady--which was a big Bob love fest. And I still haven't discussed some of the best songs at both shows--stay tuned!

It has been a hectic few weeks so I have just now been able to give this the attention it deserves. Wonderfully written
